Co-op 2.0 : UC HR

This semester I got the opportunity to do an HR co-op on campus. I learned about the policies and procedures of UC. I helped my supervisor to compile a manual. Whenever I felt that a problem can arise, I learned to think of alternatives and would suggest them to my supervisor. I also learned the US employments laws and how to keep crucial documents confidential. I gained the trust of my colleagues and supervisor through this. Sometimes I would work at the Front Desk. It made me learn what I should say and what I shouldn’t say, this helped me improve my critical thinking skills as the HR department is vast and most times there is no fixed answer. I was given the opportunity to learn about the labor unions and also learned how to match data with the unions which made me realize that I am a detail-oriented person. I had an eye for when data was incorrectly marked. I improved my communication skills too. For matching data, I needed to use Excel and I was the only student worker who knew how to use it. So, the other student workers asked me what they should learn too. I was happy I could share my knowledge! I also learned how to manage office assets and not throw them away, but to give them to the surplus management department at UC. After working with the labor relations department, I learned that it is not in my interest. I am also super glad I had such a great supervisor. She helped me a lot in the professional ladder and made me aware of the resources available on campus.

I chose these 2 reports as the 1st report was when I had to set goals for this co-op and the 2nd report was to understand where I stood and whether I have progressed in my goals.
